G.C.E O/L Appreciation of English Literary Texts

English Literature and the English Education system of Sri Lanka

English Literature is one of the toughest subjects in G.C.E O/L. When half a million students sit for the exam, approximately eight thousand select English Literature as a subject, and even out of those an average of two thousand ‘A’ passes can be seen annually.

The two main problems for the unfortunate situation is the poor teaching skills and the lack of awareness of the teachers on the basic requirements of the subject.

Even though there are many experienced teachers in the country, their primary target seems to be the syllabus coverage. The byhearted notes given seem to have some jargon which attracts the inexperienced. Yet, examination questions are based on the child’s creative ability to appreciate/criticize.

Many of the traditional teachers fail to correct even the basic grammar mistakes of the students since they believe that English Literature should be followed by only the students who are fluent in English. Of course, we agree with the concept but do you know that two hundred thousand students; nearly 50% of the participated students fail English every year. Therefore, it is evident that the current system of English education which is at a crisis has already failed, and will continue to fail unless it is changed for the better. Therefore how can we assume all students who follow English Literature, should have perfect language proficiency?

Apart from that, the capital-centric English education system is another bane the students have to overcome. It forces them to compete with those learn from the few best teachers at Colombo leaving them no option but to drop English Literature as a subject.

We at ELSL, believe that the imbalance of English proficiency and the biased treatments should be changed in the country. That is why we strive to spread excellent education, especially in areas away from the capital, where quality English education is hardly found.
